Heartthrobs and Heroes

...What is it about someone that pulls on our heart strings or makes the knees go weak...there is a strength of character and the way he looks, but also something more...be it a chivalrous act, a kind word, a smile..this page is for the guys that inspire our novels...

The old adage of "a picture is worth a thousand words" aptly expresses the importance of visualization. When developing characters, an author has to have a picture in their mind of the character so that they maintain those physical characteristics throughout the book. Have you ever read a book and felt the character's physical looks changed at some point in the story? I have. I also have read books where the physical characteristics seemed off; it left you feeling like someone really couldn't look like that.

When writing, I have a pin board that has pictures of settings and characters so that I have a permanent visualization of the physical aspects that I am writing about. I like action shots that can aid in properly describing how a body moves or looks like when moving. I am a also firm believer that pictures inspire words and have found that my words are sometimes better when inspired by a picture.

The internet is a visual feast of pictures, but it can still be difficult to find a picture that embodies a character you are portraying. At first glance you would think it would be easy, but that's not always the case. I personally find that I am turned off by "over the top" posed pictures. The more appealing ones are the ones that seem more "real" or perhaps more "honest".

Again, a picture is worth a thousand words...
